ABRAHAM STRIAR -- OBITUARY

 
BANGOR - Abraham Striar passed away July 27, 2006, at The Arbor, Dirigo Pines, Orono. Abraham was born Aug. 27, 1913, in Bangor, son of Soffie and Bennie Striar. He attended Bangor schools and while enrolled in the chemistry department of the University of Maine, he worked as a bellhop at the Windsor Hotel, later becoming one of the desk clerks. Upon the outbreak of World War II, he was one of the early draftees into the Army. When basic training was completed, he attended officer's candidate school and became a lieutenant in the quartermaster corp. eventually serving in the occupation forces in Japan. In 1946, after discharge from the Army, he entered into a business association with Abe Miller and started Miller Variety Store, which became Miller Drug when Bill Miller became a pharmacist. During this time he joined the Army Reserves, later transferring to the 101st Maine Air National Guard. When he retired, he held the rank of lieutenant colonel. Abe had an interest in horses and horse racing. He owned several racing horses, had a driver's license and was the driver of his horses' races at the Bangor track. He was a member of the Beth Abraham Synogogue and the Reserve Officer's Association, among other affiliations. He is survived by brothers, Louis, David and his wife, Clara and Dr. Ronald Striar, all of Bangor; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Pfc. Bernard Striar, who was killed in action in Italy during World War II; a sister, Sarah Rosenthal of Scranton, Pa. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent, concerned, friendly, loving, caring and professional staff at Dirigo Pines. It truly became his home away from home. Funeral services will be conducted noon, July 28, at the Jewish Funeral Chapel, 118 Center St., Bangor by Rabbi Fred Nebel. Interment will be at the Beth Abraham Cemetery, Bangor.
