Jonas Smith was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on October 29, 1930. He moved to Portland, Maine in 1956 and opened Mr. Jonas, hair stylist there. He was a prominent member of the Jewish community in Portland. Smith died on August 29, 2018. The State Street Traditional Jazz Band was founded in 1989 by John Page.
