Description
Chassidic Jews from Eastern Europe in the late 19th century founded a group that later became Anshe Sfard synagogue. In 1917, the congregation built a synagogue on Cumberland Avenue in Portland, near the intersection with Wilmot Street. By sometime in the 1950s, the building was no longer in use.
The synagogue was demolished in 1983. With the exterior wall removed, several paintings are faintly visible on the interior walls. The paintings -- of an aqueduct and olive trees -- are typical of Polish synagogues.
