Camp Chickawah was founded in 1920 by Joe "Chick" Saltman from New York City. Before World War I, he graduated from City College with a major in PE and a minor in Education with plans to become a teacher. He earned money playing piano in silent movie theaters, and secured a job as recreation director at the Hebrew Orphanage and School in Pleasantville, NY after he graduated. There he met his future wife, Celia. Before they could marry, Joe was drafted into the US Army and trained troops for combat at a US army base. When the war was over, Celia and Joe (now nicknamed "Chick") were married, and spent the summer working at a New York summer camp for boys. Determined to have their own camp, they searched for property in New England and found their future home on Island Pond in Harrison. His first summer, he opened Camp Chickawah with "32 boys and 3 nephews" who lived in 12 used army tents. The camp, now Fernwood Cove, ran for 65 years. #campchickawah #islandpond #harrisonmaine #fernwoodcove #jewishmaine #mainesummercamp #jewishhistory #mainehistory #mainesummercamps
