A 1935 refugee from anti-Semitism in pre-World War II Lithuania and nephew of Auburn shoe manufacturer, Philip Lown, Bernard Lown became a renowned cardiologist, was an inventor of the cardiac defibrillator, and co-founded the Nobel Prize winning International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.
