A report of a Jewish marriage in 1894 in Le Messager

May 8, 1884 - private collection

Thank you to Le Messager and James Myall for the photo

Note:
translation : " Sunday evening, in the synagoge above our offices, a Jewish marriage took place. A great many curious onlookers were there to witness the ceremonies which are quite different to our own. After having pronounced the "yes" and having placed the ring on the finger of his finance, the husband pours a glass of wine on the floor which had been placed on the table at the beginning of the ceremony. The marriage was thus consummated. It was a beautiful party and there were pretty bouquets. It was Mr J J Shapiro of New Auburn who married Miss Minnie Levenson, of the same."
