PORTLAND -- Bettina Levine 94 passed away on Sunday, Dec. 16., 2012.
She was born in Portland to Morris 'Archie' Levine and Bertha (Ross) Levine. She was predeceased by her brother, Sidney Levine. After living apart in Boston for many years, the two siblings, Bettina and Sidney, moved back under one roof in Portland at the Osher Inn at the Cedars . In Boston, she worked for many years running the office of an insurance company, but her home in her heart was always in Portland.
Bettina was an honest and quiet person. She looked after her brother in their final years of life, and was a regular contributor to charities in the Portland area. She had a striking ability to remember dates, names and birthdays, and even remembered seating arrangements from wedding celebrations that took place many decades ago. She was a lifelong Democrat, and was happy to vote for President Obama and see him elected to a second term. She was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.
She treasured her Jewish upbringing and the Jewish holidays and traditions. She was a member for many years at Shaarey Tphiloh Synagogue, and continued to make certain that Hebrew prayers were said for the souls of her brother and other family members after they passed away.
Her family and her friends were very important to her, and she will be missed. She is survived by her special cousins, Nancy and Charlie Schuman of Winthrop and Barbara and Kenneth Safon of North Carolina.
The staff at Osher Inn at Cedars provided loving care to Bettina from the day that she moved back to Portland.
Burial was private, with Rabbi Akiva Herzfeld presiding. Arrangements were by the Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.
