RUTH SHURMAN -- OBITUARY
October 09, 1920 - October 19, 2017

   
WEST PALM BEACH Ruth Shurman, 97, of Delray Beach, Fl and Dexter, ME passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 19 surrounded by her family. Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and friend to many, Ruth was born in Emmendingen, Germany on Oct. 9, 1920 and spent her early years in Freiburg. In 1939, following her father's detainment after Kristelnact at Dachau and release, she immigrated with her family to the United States and settled in Jackson Heights, NY. She later moved to Dexter, ME when she married Dr. Hans Shurman, a respected family practitioner. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage and wonderful life together both in Dexter and Florida until his passing in 2004. She continued to travel to Dexter and enjoyed 74 summers in her little red house overlooking Lake Wassookeag. Mrs. Shurman was as an active golfer, swimmer and bridge player who enjoyed classical music, the opera and her Sunday New York Times. She served on school committees, women's charitable organizations and medical auxiliaries in Maine and was always willing to drive her many friends and neighbors to concerts and events. She will be fondly remembered for her vitality, energy and keen intellect. Ruth was the daughter of Robert and Selman (Kahn) Wertheimer and sister of Walter Wertheimer (Helen Wachen). She is survived by her two daughters Valerie (Dr. Steven) Silverman and Betsy (John) Brod, four adored grandchildren, Aimee Silverman (Greg Horowitz), Michael Silverman, Seth Brod and Jennifer (Jeff) Bernstein, three great-grandchildren, Ethan and Andrew Horowitz and Billie Alexa Bernstein. Her extended family includes nieces and nephews in Canada and many cousins in France, Germany and Israel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, October 23 at Rubin Memorial Chapel in Boynton Beach, Fl. to be followed by internment in Cedar Park Cemetery in Emerson, NJ.
